Can Horoscopes Be Accurate?

No. That’s the short answer. But there’s a longer answer.

The word “horoscope” has several definitions. When it’s used to describe those newspaper or magazine columns that supposedly predict your future, take it with a grain of salt.

A horoscope is a forecast of your future based on your Sun sign. Your Sun sign is derived from your date of birth – month and day. If you were born on June 16th, like me, you’re a Gemini. Click here to find out your zodiac sign.

Horoscopes can never be accurate. How can they be? As of 2022, if there are 7 billion people on the planet, how can 1/12, or 583,333,333 million people, have the same day? It’s not possible. Horoscopes leave out nine of your other planets, not to mention houses and aspects. And it gets worse. Most horoscopes are not written by real astrologers. *Clutches pearls in shock.

There are many app’s out there that give you free daily or monthly horoscopes, but trusting them isn’t the best astrological tool.

Horoscopes give you very generalized guidance that can apply to everyone. That’s why you can relate to them – and so can your BFF and your Mom. They can’t be your personal predictive guide. It’s not how they work. They really should not be used to make decisions either.

The sad thing is that horoscopes have given astrology a bad reputation. The generality of their predictions damaged astrology’s credentials as a forecasting tool.  While horoscopes made astrology accessible to the world because they are based on your birth date, which everyone has, this generality caused it a lot of harm. It’s so hard to win! Cynics and non-believers think they can debunk astrology because they believe it’s only about horoscope forecasts. They don’t know that astrology is so much more to it than that. If you think astrology is only about these Sun sign horoscopes, you’re probably not going to believe in it and you may end up disappointed when your new love or new job never materializes. Sun sign horoscopes only focus on one planet – the Sun. Now it is an important planet but it’s far from the only thing. There are nine other planets, 12 houses, 11 other zodiac signs and planetary aspects that connect planets – that affect who you are and your future.

Modern popular astrology apps like like Co-Star or The Pattern can get a lot right. They can be more accurate than Sun sign horoscopes, because they ask for and use all your birth information in their calculation. They incorporate your birth time, day, month, year and location which allows their algorithms to account for all 12 signs, 10 planets, 12 houses and aspects in your birth chart. But can they properly interpret your future? The jury is out. It’s not easy (or accurate) to mash together thousands of lines of code and create a proper picture of who you are or your future. It would take a professional astrologer to put the whole picture together properly – if you ask me. But sometimes a mash up can offer a lot of insight too. No shade!
